10K SHOT CHALLENGE
10K SHOT CHALLENGE
What is the 10,000 Shot Club?
The Mound Westonka Hockey Association (MWHA) is launching a new 10,000 Shot Club during the offseason. Players are challenged to take 10,000 shots before the 2026-2027 hockey season starts. Everyone who completes the challenge will earn a custom MWHA 10,000 Shot shirt. Your name will also be featured on the MWHA website and displayed in the Performance Center.
Why 10,000 Shots?
Teams are built during the season, but players and their skills are built in the offseason! Start improving your skills now. The best way to get better is to practice your shots over and over, with focus. Build your muscle memory in the summer, so you’re ready for the season!
Who Can Join & Important Rules
- Players who are currently in 2nd grade-8th grade
- Take 10,000 focused “game shots” between April 1 and August 31. That’s 153 days, or approximately 65 shots per day.
- Keep a detailed log using the app – see more details below. No guessing! Count out loud or know that you are going to do 25+ snap shots, 25+ wrist shots, 25+ pick a corner, etc. Record them every day.
- Shots during games, practices, or camps/clinics do NOT count. Only shots taken during your own practice time count.
- Parents/Guardians do not need to watch and we encourage parents to “help” out sparingly. We want our players to start taking their development upon themselves rather than have it be forced upon them. Parents or guardians will log shots unless of age/have phone with 10,000 shots app
Don’t worry about how many shots you make—focus on proper form and technique!
What is a “Game Shot”?
Practice shots as if you’re in a real game. No slap shots or shots from far away. Focus on shots from the slot (10–20 feet from the net). Try stickhandling moves before shooting to create space, like toe drags or stick handling umbrella routines. Imagine you’re beating a defender before you shoot.
What is “Focused Practice”?
Have a plan for your practice? Decide what you want to work on—maybe a stickhandling move or your shot form. Practice each move 10–25 times in a row. Warm up with close-range shots, then add stickhandling moves. Focused practice and repetition help you improve faster than random practice.
HOW TO MAKE IT MORE FUN!
- Pretend you’re playing against your favorite player as a “ghost” defender.
- Imagine a defender you need to get by and create space before shooting.
- Play out a whole game or just the final shot.
- Count how many shots you make in a row.
- Track how many corners or five-hole shots you make.
- Pass to yourself or mimic a teammate’s pass.
- Time yourself—how many shots in 1 or 2 minutes?
- Chart how many shots from the slot you make out of 25 each day.
- Options are endless!!!
Shooting Fundamentals to Focus On:
- Mentality: Focus on the net and visualize scoring.
- Balance: Start with good balance—feet placement, bent knees, hands in the right spot.
- Hand Placement: Top hand away from your body, lower hand in proper spot to maximize stick flex.
- Pre-Release: Stickhandle to move the puck onto the heel of your stick, in a ready position.
- Whole Body: Use your legs, hips, abs, and wrists for power and accuracy.
- Shot: Keep your balance after shooting, point your stick where you want the puck to go.
- Rotation: Proper form makes the puck spin smoothly and not wobble.
Sample Game Shot Routines:
There are many different variations of your shot routine that you can create. But the best routines can involve a quick stick handle move to create space for a clean shot. Below are examples of “game shots” that, if practiced, regularly and with focus, WILL
IMPROVE YOUR OVERALL GAME!
- Snap Shot: Quick motion, knee height, surprises goalies with speed and accuracy.
- Wrist Shot: Uses a sweeping motion, great for tight spaces.
- Backhand Shot: Uses the back side of the stick blade, good for close-range shots.
- One Timer: Shoot right after receiving a pass, without stopping the puck.
- Tip-In/Deflection: Redirect a teammate’s shot in front of the net.
- Wrap Around: Skate behind the net and try to tuck the puck in before the goalie covers the post.
- Sauce Pass/Shot: Lift the puck over a defender’s stick or goalie’s pad.
You could do any of these 10-25 times in a row to create a wicked wrister:
Be creative! Watch great players and try their moves. Practice until your shot feels natural in a game.
Goalie Involvement:
Hockey goalies should absolutely learn to shoot and stickhandle, as it acts like having a third defenseman, reducing pressure and helping with breakouts. Key skills include stopping dump-ins, making quick passes to defenders, and using a "Turco" (overhand) grip for better control. Practicing with a goalie stick and gloves, or using a golf ball, improves confidence and consistency
- Practice using a regular stick as well as your goalie stick
- Half or more of your shots should be used with your glove and blocker
- Incorporate some try of stick handling movement before shots
- Also, try to simulate game actions like stopping a puck ringing around the boards, around the crease, different goalie positions, focusing on different angles etc. before shooting
